Aerik didn't want to sit and meditate in the field. He didn't even want to practice any magic tricks, like making things float or bringing dead flowers back to life, no matter how often I begged him. He just needed to be on the farm, doing anything at all, even hanging out playing video games, just to be surrounded by the energy he could feel. So, he came with me to feed the horses and groom them, helped me tend to the pigs and the chickens, and came back again the following weekend to do the same. I had to admit, silent as he was, he was handy because he was hardworking and pretty darn strong. A job that took me half an hour, he could do in fifteen minutes. And sometimes, he'd even come down here with me after school, which made the long drive seem less lonely.

Slowly, it felt like Aerik was becoming a friend, but I hadn't let myself think on that for any more than a millisecond, because I actually liked this friendship, and I was certain that if I looked it in the eye, noticed it, it would evaporate.

As we finished up in the barn for the morning and headed in for lunch, I noticed him closing his eyes, twisting his wrists this way and that. He did that from time to time but I was never sure why, and though I had license to ask him anything, I hadn't yet felt like I had the right, as though it was somehow invasive.

"My uncle thinks we're dating,” I told him, hugging the saddle blanket I was taking up for mending.

He opened his eyes and laughed through his nose, shaking his wrist out. "What did you say to that?”

"I asked him if he actually knew me at all.”

"Nice.”

Ahead of us, Chester nosed at a mound of grass until something fat and brown popped out, then he chased it across the marigold field, giving it a piece of his mind. He was happy here. Like me, he missed Gran from time to time, but he found ways to keep busy, made new friends.

"So, how is it all going?” I asked, nodding to Aerik's hands when he looked down at them, focusing on the fine particles of glowing light that danced on the edges. "The energy. Are you feeling stronger?”

Aerik drew a long breath through his nose, his expression changing to reflect deep concentration. "I am, yeah.”

"When do you think you'll be able to go home?”

He scoffed, turning slightly to face me for a moment, hands going into his back pockets. "Sick of me already?”

"Contrary to popular opinion, I'd rather keep you around,” I mused, showing him the blanket, because it was him who'd grabbed it off the top shelf for me when I couldn't reach. "You're actually pretty handy.”

He laughed at that, bringing his shoulders around as he slumped slightly forward. "It'll be a while yet—before I can go home. Something's happening… in me. But it's not happening overnight.
